Day by Day
A slow-travel arc from Melbourne’s surf coast to Adelaide’s markets — rainforest, sea stacks, sinkholes, terra rossa vineyards, and two buffer days held in reserve.
Day 01
Collect the campervan and trace the surf coast through Torquay and Bells Beach, pausing for cliffside walks along the way. Overnight at a holiday park near the beach in Lorne.
Day 02
Morning at Erskine Falls before a short, slow drive into the Otways. An afternoon rainforest walk beneath the tree ferns, then a harbourside evening in Apollo Bay.
Day 03
Maits Rest rainforest walk in the morning, then the coast’s grand set pieces: the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and Gibson Steps at golden hour.
Day 04
An unhurried run west to the old whaling port. The Griffiths Island lighthouse walk at dusk, with wallaby spotting along the causeway.
Day 05
Cross into South Australia’s volcanic country. Descend into the hanging gardens of the Umpherston Sinkhole and stand over the winter-steel waters of the Blue Lake.
Day 06
A short hop north into the terra rossa strip. Wine region tasting day among the cabernet houses, then a rural campground or farm stay among the vines.
Day 07
The long leg. Roll northwest through farmland to the Adelaide Hills with a stop in Hahndorf, Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement, before arriving in Adelaide.
Day 08
Explore the Adelaide Central Market’s produce halls in the morning and take the tram down to Glenelg Beach for a late-winter seafront afternoon.
Day 09
Unscheduled by design. Linger in Adelaide, revisit a favourite stretch of coast, or absorb any weather delays without pressure on the itinerary.
Day 10
The second flexible day: extend the expedition, or begin the return leg to Melbourne to close the loop and hand back the campervan.

Cost Optimization
Four levers that could materially compress the ledger above — ranked by the size of the line they attack.
i
Relocation rentals from AUD 1/day plus free fuel/km could cut the AUD 1,500 hire cost by over 90% — if dates align with an available Melbourne–Adelaide or Melbourne–Sydney route.
Targets the largest shared lineii
Booking further ahead or exploring alternate carriers — fares seen from USD 616 for less direct routings — could reduce the largest single cost line of the entire trip.
Targets Farhan’s airfareiii
Swapping some powered holiday park nights for free or unpowered bush camping could cut the AUD 405 camping total by up to 50%.
Targets the campsite lineiv
The Australian government’s temporary fuel excise relief expires August 2, 2026 — so earlier August travel captures lower pump prices on the diesel line.

Field Notes
Practical intelligence for a Southern Hemisphere winter coastal run — gathered before departure, not learned on the road.
August is late winter and shoulder season on this coast — expect 8–16°C coastal temperatures. Layer clothing: thermals, a warm mid-layer and a windproof, waterproof shell for cliff-top walks.
The Great Ocean Road is narrow and winding — drive it unhurried, keep left, and use pull-offs to let traffic pass. Watch for wildlife crossings at dawn and dusk, when kangaroos and wallabies are most active.
The visiting traveler must book the Australia ETA before departure — only via the official AustralianETA app, AUD 20 flat fee. Beware third-party scam sites charging far more for the same approval.
Budget in AUD and convert to USD only for planning. Contactless payment is ubiquitous across Australia — carry a no-foreign-fee card, tap for nearly everything, and keep minimal cash for remote campgrounds.
Self-catering is the cost-control engine of a campervan trip. Provision at Aldi or Coles in the larger towns — Torquay, Warrnambool, Mount Gambier — to keep the food line at budget.
